Mellow Mushroom Event

We are very excited about our meeting this week. On Thursday at 5pm, we will meet at Mellow Mushroom to network over some delicious food with PR professionals. Some appetizers will be provided to us for FREE, but don't let your eating stop there. Mellow will donate a portion of our sales to our organization! So, I don't know about you all, but I am looking forward to a calzone and a mixed drink or two!

Anyone and everyone is invited. Bring your friends to enjoy this fun, "mellow" evening! Hey, you never know...your future employer could be there. Don't miss out on making that great first impression and learn a little bit about the real PR world!

Looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday. Have a good week!

So much going on this month...Try to keep up!

Happy Halloween everyone!

The semester is flying by and we have a lot going on this coming month. First up will be our next chapter meeting on Thursday, November 4th. A Sports PR panel will join PRSSA at 5:30pm in ECTR 115.

This Friday, November 5 is the PRSA conference in Columbia, SC. Students can register for an extremely discounted rate of $35! We will all drive up to Columbia together, early on Friday morning. The conference is scheduled from 9-3pm, then we will return to Charleston. For more information on the conference and to sign up, visit http://www.scprsa.org/PDConference.htm. The registration deadline is TOMORROW (11/1).

Also on Friday, PRSSA has the great opportunity to not only help out with the men's basketball exhibition game, but also raise money for our organization. We are looking for a few volunteers to work one of the concession stands at the game on Friday evening. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to CofC PRSSA! Please contact VP Imana Holmes at ikholmes@edisto.cofc.edu.

Looking ahead a little bit further, our chapter meeting scheduled for November 18 will be at Mellow Mushroom on King St. Don't miss out on a night of food, networking, and fun! Seriously, who doesn't love pizza? And there will be several PRSA professionals joining us for dinner so you can meet your future boss! Mellow has also agreed to donate a percentage of our sales to our group, so come hungry...and thirsty for that matter :)

Finally, information about our service project with Crisis Ministries will be announced soon. We are looking to volunteer in their soup kitchen and possibly run a food drive for them.

That's all for now. Hope to see everyone this Thursday get the inside look at Sports PR. Can't Wait!

Bake Sale....Mmmm

As you may or may not have known, we did not do our Dollar Doughnut sale yesterday. Instead, we switched it up this week with a traditional bake sale this (quite chilly) Saturday morning. It is Family Weekend here on campus, so there were plenty of people out and about going to different events.

Compared to the doughnut sale, we did exceptionally well. I guess our parents just know how much us college kids need support, because they were great. Although we were all up a little early for a Saturday morning, I think I speak for everyone when I say we all had a good time and everyone was very friendly.

We had just about everything you could think of: cookies, brownies, rice krispy treats, muffins, and granola bars. As my favorite Food Network star Rachael Ray would say, "Yum-O!" Our officer team sure can bake :)

And thanks so much to Lucy Remitz and Hannah Ashe who came out to help us run the sale!

Be sure to check back here and on Facebook for other upcoming PRSSA events that you too can be a part of.

Have a great rest of the weekend everybody!

Check this out!

Good morning, PRSSA,

As I was checking out the National PRSSA blog, I came across a recent post relating to our Health Care PR panel last week (By the way, thanks to everyone who came! We had a great turn out and learned a lot from Jessica Munday and Heather Woolwine). There really seemed to be a lot of interest in the healthcare field so I thought I would share the link so you can see yet another perspective:

Also, remember the deadline for submitting your membership application is October 26. If you need an application, contact Keisha Murray (ktmurray@edisto.cofc.edu).

Have a great weekend!

Volunteers needed!!

Hey everyone!

We are excited for our second week of Dollar Doughnut Friday this Friday, September 24th. We made a little profit last week, but I know we can do much better...seriously, who doesn't LOVE Krispy Kreme??

We could use some help working the table in Cougar Mall between 7:30-11am. It would be great if you could volunteer to work a one-hour shift. We need 1-2 people at a time. Contact Brittany Dahn on Facebook or by e-mail at bfdahn@gmail.com if you can help us out!

Other than that, we're looking forward to our Healthcare PR panel tomorrow night. Just bring yourself and any questions you may have to ask the professionals during the Q&A session. Remember, the meeting is at 5:30pm in ECTR 115.

Finally, if you haven't already, be sure to join our Facebook group CofC PRSSA.

See everyone for the panel tomorrow night!

Membership, Activities, and More!

We had a great turnout at our Chapter meeting last Thursday, thanks to everyone who attended!

For those of you who couldn't attend, here are some of the topics we discussed:

1. Benefits of PRSSA membership: For only $65/year, you can become an official member of PRSSA. This entitles you access to the PRSSA national job board, exclusive campus benefits, as well as a certificate, membership card, and subscription to Tactics magazine.

Although CofC PRSSA does not require membership to participate right away, we ask that if you are unsure about joining you use the first semester as a trial run. By spring semester, you should have a good idea about whether or not the organization is right for you. At that time, you can decide if you are going to become an official member or not.

Dues are collected twice per year- October 26 and February 26 (You only pay ONCE per year, fall OR spring).

2. 2010-2011 Activities: This fall, we are excited to launch our Dollar Doughnut fundraiser. We will give everyone the opportunity to volunteer Friday mornings to sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts around campus. More information is to come!

The PRSSA National Conference in Washington D.C. will be October 15-19. The conference will consist of professional speakers, workshops, networking events, socials, and more. The deadline to sign up is TODAY (Monday Sept. 13). For more information, visit http://www.prssa.org/conference/default.aspx or e-mail Dr. Ruth at ruthmcswaina@cofc.edu.

CofC PRSSA will also be involved in community service projects throughout the semester. More details to come.

3. PRSSA Communication: There are a few ways you can stay connected to PRSSA. Join our Facebook group, CofC PRSSA. We will consistently update the page with meeting reminders, special events, and other news. Also, be sure to check your school e-mail account, as PRSSA notifications will be sent there as well.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 7 at 5:30pm in ECTR 115. Come ready to learn about Health PR from a panel of professionals! This is a great opportunity to network and get questions answered.

Have a great week!

~The PRSSA Officer Team

First Chapter Meeting of the Year!

Join CofC PRSSA for the first chapter meeting of the year this Thursday, Sept. 9. The meeting will be in Education Center Room 115 at 5:30pm.

This first meeting will serve as an introduction to the organization and highlight what we have planned for this semester.

PRSSA is a great group to get involved with on campus. Not only does it teach students about the PR profession, but it also gives students the opportunity to network with men and women in the industry.

Any and all interested students are encouraged to attend the meeting on Thursday to find out if PRSSA is right for you! Be sure to become a fan of our Facebook page as well!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask our Chapter Faculty Advisor, Dr. Ruth-McSwain at ruthmcswaina@cofc.edu or Chapter President Monique Dyer at mddyer@edisto.cofc.edu.
